FETID MANGROVE TO USEFUL BIODIVERSITY
(This event has already taken place)

IN DETAIL

Mangroves were once considered fetid, malarial swamps and were even used in literature to represent a primitive and dangerous threat. This attitude was complicit in their rapid global decline over the past 70 years. Now we understand that they are amongst the most useful of all ecosystems and some of us consider them beautiful too. In this talk I will describe the current global state of mangrove conservation and what we know about the services that these remarkable forests provide. I will discuss a case study of mangrove conservation from southern Kenya, Mikoko Pamoja, that uses the sale of carbon credits to fund protection and community development and consider some of the strengths and weaknesses of this new source of conservation funding.
